December 1, 2015 (Tulsa, Okla.) –The McIntosh Group, a national architecture firm based in Tulsa, Okla. donated $5,000 to The Center for Individuals with Physical Challenges to support their new accessibility class teaching individuals with visual impairments how to use iPads and iPods to be more independent.
“This cause aligns so well with our mission as a company,” owner Lanny McIntosh said. “Giving people with disabilities the opportunity to experience things that are so readily available to rest of us just goes hand-in-hand with our work as architects specializing in accessibility.”
The Center’s Access 101 class will teach visually impaired individuals how to get the most out of Apple products and accessibility features.
The McIntosh Group uses iPads and a proprietary database software to conduct their clients’ ADA surveys in the field. With a heavy focus on both technology and accessibility, The McIntosh Group found this cause a perfect fit.
“Getting involved with The Center is so important to our company because we work with the ADA every day on the business side of it, helping building owners make sure their buildings are ADA compliant – it’s important to make it real for our employees who are working to improve accessibility,” Karen MacCannell, Director of Business Development for The McIntosh Group said. “And while doing that, we can provide members at The Center with opportunities that they wouldn’t have otherwise had. It’s a win-win.”
The Center’s Access 101 class will be taught by a member volunteer instructor and will feature a Beginning iOS and Advanced iOS option. Members will learn how to use accessibility features and work independently on any iOS app. The McIntosh Group’s donation will also support volunteer coordination, sports conference attendance where the staff can become certified in adaptive sports, and it will help interested members of The Center attend Paralympic events and trials.
